Recap for NCEA Week Four

WACO, Texas – The National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) had seven meets during the fourth week of competition; here's how it all played out!

The Meet of the Week was No. 4 Texas A&M at No. 2 South Carolina as well as Berry at No. 4 College of Charleston.

There were upsets with No. 4 College of Charleston besting No. 2 Sweet Briar, along with No. 10 UC Davis and No. 9 Fresno State upending No. 5 TCU.
 
10/16 – No. 10 UC Davis Downs No. 5 TCU
DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis equestrian made program history on Thursday morning, earning its first-ever win over No. 5 TCU with a commanding 13–7 victory at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Sophomore Sophia Blake made a strong start in Flat with an 82 on Cassie, securing the first point of the round for the Aggies. Sophomore Carmen Gonzalez followed with a 79 aboard Calvigo to add another to the scoreboard.
 
Junior Lauren Kolbe then delivered the standout ride of the meet, earning an outstanding score of 88 on Stallone and the highest score of the day, claiming both the point and MOP honors. Freshman Cavan Smith closed out the event with an 86 on Courtage, earning the team another point, as UC Davis took a commanding 4-1 win heading into Fences.
 
In Fences, Kolbe kicked it off with a ride on Bam Bam, earning an 84 to secure a point for the Aggies and again earning the highest score of the event. Gonzalez followed with an 82 aboard Otis, picking up another point. Freshman Lily Grosz then closed out the event by riding Ronan to a 78, adding a third point for UC Davis as the Aggies claimed the event 3–2.
 
Junior Kylie Jacobson opened Horsemanship with a re-ride, switching from Penny to Camacho, where she delivered a pair of consistent 70s to edge out her TCU opponent and earn the first point of the event. Sophomore Eliza Plum followed with a strong ride on Shylo, scoring a 75 and the highest score of the event to secure a second point for the Aggies as they added two more to their total in the Western arena.
 
Junior Mylea Trimble opened Reining aboard Vinny, where a gear malfunction mid-ride led to a re-run. After restarting from the point of interruption, she completed a clean second half to earn a 69.5, edging out her opponent by just half a point.
 
Sophomore Ada Hirschfeld followed with a 70 on Camacho, earning another point for the Aggies before senior Nicole Shroyer posted the highest score of the event, a 72 on Mr. T. Senior Mya Clader then closed out the meet with a 70.5 on Belle, securing UC Davis its fourth point in Reining and capping off a historic team performance against the Horned Frogs.

10/17 – No. 3 Auburn Dispatched Berry in Exhibition
AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 3 Auburn equestrian team defeated Berry College, 7-3, in a single-discipline meet Friday afternoon at the Auburn Equestrian Center. The Tigers went 4-1 on the Flat and 3-2 in Fences to come away with the win in the jumping seat–only competition.

“I was very happy with the team and the way they rode today,” Auburn head coach Jessica Braswell said. “We were able to mix up the lineup a little bit, and Molly Segars on Fences came through at the end with a huge ride with the 92, which was the highest score over Fences today. That was a pretty big pressure situation, so it was great to see that from her.

“Kate Hagerty was the MOP on the Flat, and it was her first career Flat MOP today. She rode beautifully in both events. Ariana [Marnell] had her first career MOP in Fences as well. I honestly thought they all rode great. Coach Emma Kurtz and I talked about it after, and we really would not have changed the way they rode today, so [I’m] very pleased with where they are.”

Hagerty earned her first career Most Outstanding Performer honor on the Flat with an 87 on Gigi, edging Berry’s Devon Ansley 87-85. Baylee Mckeever notched an 86-79 victory in her first ride of the season, while Kate Parker earned an 84-72 win for her first Flat point of the year. Sadie Berkhout also picked up a victory, riding Herbie to a 78-75 win.

In Fences, Marnell was awarded her first career MOP after defeating Emily Sudderth 90-83. Hagerty recorded her second win of the day with an 89 on Georgie, and Segars concluded the meet with an impressive 92-88 victory to give Auburn its third point in Fences.


10/17 – No. 2 South Carolina Picks Up Win Over No. 4 Texas A&M
BLYTHEWOOD, SC
 – The No. 2 South Carolina Equestrian team (2-0, 1-0) kept the good times rolling, defeating No. 4 Texas A&M (1-1, 0-1) in an SEC Championship rematch, 14-6. The eight-point spread marked the largest win over the Aggies in program history.

“I am so thrilled with how prepared all of our assistant coaches had our athletes for this meet,” head coach Carol Gwin said. “We’ve been working hard on our consistency, and I think it showed today with several different individuals contributing to the point total in both disciplines.”

Three Gamecocks took home MOPs, with Grace Rabb (Fences) and Kenley Koch (Flat) picking up the first of their careers. Sophomore Reiner Olivia Cardi nabbed her first of the season and the third of her career.

The day got started in Fences, with South Carolina taking the event 4-1 over the Aggies. Grace Rabb picked up the first point of the day with a massive 93-88.5 victory, marking a new career-high and the highest Fences score in program history since moving to averages (2023-24 season). Bella Primavera followed suit, taking down her opponent 83-79.5 on Rio, with Amira Kettaneh grabbing her point on Marty 88.5-83.5. Alyssa Bauer rounded out the event with a 92.5 on MJ, defeating Alexa Leong’s 88 for a new career-high.

In Horsemanship, the Aggies took the event 3-2 to make things 6-4 at the half. The Gamecocks saw points from Carly Jenkins (73.25-69 on Brad), and Alexis Potts (74.5-68 on Scratch).

Flat started the second half, with South Carolina once again coming out on top 4-1. Mary Hunter Millet won her point 89-73.5 on Fenway, followed by Kenly Koch on Major, 88.5-83 to earn the first MOP of her career. Natalie Jayne kept the points rolling with an 85-76 win on Mo, and Sarah Rabb finished with an 82.5-77.5 victory on Dento.

The day wrapped with the Reiners, where the Gamecocks defeated the Aggies 4-1. Emerson Madonia picked up the first point of her career to start, winning 68.25-66.25 on Chexie. Olivia Cardi then defeated Isabelle Gonzalez on Kinzie, 71.75-69 to earn her first MOP of the season. Mattie McNeill won her point 68-67.5 on Stoner, and Gracie Mae Stingle rounded out the meet on top, 67.25-66.5 on Okie.

10/17 – No. 9 Fresno State Earns 10-8 Win Over No. 5 TCU
FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 8 Fresno State equestrian team handed No. 5 TCU its first conference loss of the season, defeating the Horned Frogs 10-8 on Friday afternoon at the Student Horse Center. Fresno State improves to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in Big 12 play.

The Bulldogs defeated TCU for the first time since Oct. 2, 2021 and defeated a Top 5 opponent for the seventh consecutive year.

Abby Goddard earned both Western Most Outstanding Performer honors while Ryley Ferguson earned the flat MOP against TCU.

How It Happened
TCU earned a 3-2 win in the fences to open the meet. Fresno State won the first two points from Paris Mahoney and Bridey Jones, but the Horned Frogs closed out the event with three-straight.

The Bulldogs tied things up in the horsemanship, winning the event 3-2. Emma Hanson opened things up with a 76-70.25 win over Piper Keller. Shelby Robinette was edged by half a point in her ride before Hailey Olson picked up her point on the next ride. Abby Goddard earned her horsemanship point with a 75.75-75 win over Sydney Feager.

The teams were tied 5-5 at the intermission.

The Bulldogs continued the western advantage with a 3-1-1 win in the reining. Adrianna Runzo started things off with a 70.75 tie. From there the Bulldogs won three in-a-row with points from Brogan Hill, Goddard and Shelby Robinette. Goddard picked up her second MOP point of the day with a career-high 72.

At the end of the reining, Fresno State led 8-6.

Molly Stewart earned an 80 in her flat ride for a tie in the first matchup. Sage Lindvall earned her point with a 74 to her opponent's 70.5. TCU picked up the next two points and the meet came down to the final ride from TCU's Jordyn Scelsa. The Horned Frog scored a 77.5 to Ryley Ferguson's 78, giving the Bulldogs their 10th point of the afternoon and avoiding the overall team tie.

10/17 – No. 4 College of Charleston Upsets No. 2 Sweet Briar
CHARLESTON, S.C.
– A near-sweep in Fences propelled No. 4 College of Charleston to an upset win over No. 2 Sweet Briar, 6-4.

On the Flat, Charleston took two points while Sweet Briar garnered three. The Cougars' Camilla Murray earned an 85 on Lionel against a 78 to earn the MOP, with her teammate Lainie Rubin scoring an 84 on Jockamo to garner the other CofC point in the event. Vixens Hallie Nelson, Wyette Felton and Gracie Robertson earned their points for the pink and green.

In Fences, Charleston took all but one point against the Vixens, with Murray's 88 on Mozart against Maggie Booth's 84 taking the MOP to earn both on the day. Maddi Cardelli also had a high-scoring ride with an 86 on Jockamo, riding against a 73. Vixen Naomi Dachis earned the lone point for Sweet Briar on Athena.

10/17 – No. 1 Lynchburg Upends Bridgewater
LYNCHBURG, Va. –
The University of Lynchburg equestrian team earned a strong 7-3 victory over Bridgewater College on Friday afternoon at the Lynchburg Equestrian Center. Competing on their home grounds, the Hornets put together consistent rides across both Fences and Flat to secure the win.

In Fences, Lynchburg riders tallied three points behind impressive showings from Mary Katherine RagsdaleRebecca Collier, and Mackenna Moss. Ragsdale and Collier each posted event-high scores of 85 aboard Archie and Eragon, respectively, while Moss earned an 81 on Cascade. Collier was also award the MOP for fences. Their rides helped Lynchburg to a narrow 3-2 edge in the event. Madeline Rubin and Amaya Bellfield added scores of 82 and 79 riding Motaz and Zehn.

The Hornets carried that momentum into Flat, where they posted four more points to close out the meet. Abigail Devlin led the way with an 88 on Caleb, edging her Bridgewater opponent Willow Wright by two points and earning MOP. Kristin Palmer also impressed with an exhibition-high 88 on Luca, while teammates Rebecca Collier (85 on Eragon), Amaya Bellfield (83 on Ollie), and Abigail Zemp (81 on Van Gogh) each contributed to the scoring effort.

Overall, Lynchburg totaled 817 points to Bridgewater's 787. The Hornets' balanced effort and depth across the lineup proved key, as consistent rides from top to bottom highlighted the team's composure and precision.

Lynchburg will look to build on the win as the season continues, next matching up against ODAC rival Sweet Briar at home on Friday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. 

10/18 – Berry Falls to No. 4 College of Charleston
CHARLESTON, S.C. – In its second meet in as many days, No. 4 College of Charleston downed Berry, 7-3, for an undefeated weekend in the ring.

On the Flat, Samantha Aisenberg took the MOP with an 86 against a 73 from Berry on Danny. Olivia Welsh had a 77 on Lionel against a 69, Lainie Rubin an 84 versus a 73 on Nova, and Kenda Murray an 81 on Zuess against a 62. The Cougars went 4-1 in the event headed into Fences.

In Fences, Olivia Welsh earned an 84 against a 77 on Bali while Maddi Cardelli eanred an 85 on Mozart upending a 78. Camilla Murray earned the third point for the Cougars with an 88 on Athena against an 80. Berry's Willa Akins earned the MOP for the event with an 86 on Oliver, downing an 82 from her opponent.
