NCEA News

A Letter from Executive Director Lynn Hickey

Dear Friends of Collegiate Equestrian,

Many of you have seen the recent news regarding UC Davis’ decision to transition its equestrian program away from NCAA competition. Although we are disappointed with the recent announcement, we respect the decision the university has made, and we understand that institutional decisions like this are complex and difficult to make. In acknowledging that, we want to also take a moment to reach out to the students and staff at UC Davis, share perspective with our community and, most importantly, reaffirm our shared commitment to the future of collegiate equestrian.

The sport of equestrian has a storied history at the collegiate level, and we are grateful that the Aggies’ program has been part of that story. We share in the disappointment and uncertainty many of you may be feeling, and we commend each of you for your dedication, resilience, and commitment to a sport that demands both heart and discipline. Being a student-athlete is never easy and in equestrian, where you compete alongside living partners, the challenges and bonds run even deeper. Please know that the NCEA community stands with you during this time of transition. We thank you for what you have given to collegiate equestrian, and we remain committed to supporting your continued opportunities within our member programs and beyond.

The National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) remains strong, stable, and firmly committed to its mission. Collegiate equestrian continues to demonstrate its value across higher education through strong participation, outstanding student-athlete achievement, and a championship model that has served the sport well for more than two decades. The overall trajectory of collegiate equestrian is one of growth, strength, and stability. We remain steadfast in our pursuit of expansion and we will continue to advocate for new programs and expanded opportunities.

The NCEA Championship represents the highest level for head to head collegiate equestrian competition. We are proud of the quality of programs and student-athletes competing this season, including teams like UC Davis, which has built a strong and respected program and remains in position to contend for a spot at this year’s National Championship. This outstanding post-season competition hosted at the World Equestrian Center, in Ocala, Florida, is a thriving, nationally recognized event. Our membership continues to represent the highest level of collegiate equestrian competition in the United States by showcasing the country’s top eight Dual Discipline teams, and the top four Single Discipline teams, while crowning two National Champions.

Once again, we are disappointed for our colleagues at UC Davis, but in your honor know that our focus will remain on what lies ahead.

To our student athletes, coaches, supporters, and institutional partners, thank you for standing with us. Your belief in this sport matters, your investment matters, and your commitment is shaping the future. We are moving forward with purpose and with confidence in what we are building together.

With resolve,
Lynn Hickey
