Distinguished Alumni Summer Series: Meredith Houx Remiger

Meet our Distinguished Alumni! This summer series features the 2020 NCEA Distinguished Alumni honorees and will allow supporters of the NCEA to get to know them a little better. Enjoy!

Where did you spend your time as a student athlete and which years were you on the equestrian team?
I was on the Texas A&M Equestrian Team from 2000-2004 while earning a degree in International Business Management. Throughout my time as an Aggie I competed on the IHSA and NCAA Equestrian Team, where we earned multiple national championship titles.

What is your favorite equestrian team memory?
There are so many special memories I have from being on the team. From all of the great skills I learned riding so many different types of horses, to road trips and competitions, to making lifelong friends.

Are you still involved with horses?
Yes, I am fortunate enough to still be involved with horses and ride almost every day.

Tell us a little bit about your current career and how you got to where you are today:
After spending time in the horses industry around the country, I moved back to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2006. With the support of my husband and family, I opened up Sandia Farm, a Hunter/Jumper facility where I teach, ride, and compete (also with clients) coast to coast.

How did your experience as a student athlete help propel you in your current career?
Being part of the equestrian team at A&M really gave me extra mileage and experience. It was a priceless opportunity being able to practice and compete on so many different types of horses at venues nationally. My coaches constantly supported and educated me to be the best athlete I could be. Balancing studies, practice, workouts and travel to competitions taught me organizational skills and time management that I apply daily.

How valuable was the opportunity you had to be part of a team?
Being part of a team was invaluable! Getting to be around a group of athletes that were so motivational and talented showed me how important it is to have a positive and supportive group of people that surround you to help you reach your goals, while keeping it fun along the way.

If you could tell your college self anything, what would it be?
Enjoy every moment and continue to stay focused on your goals and dreams.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years I hope to be doing the same thing….educating riders, horses, and continuing to compete and educate myself.
